Overview

To really know you're getting the right PDA, take time to determine how you're realistically going to use it. Don't buy a fully loaded PDA just because you're afraid you might buy one that will be obsolete in 6 months. Guaranteed, your PDA will be obsolete, and in 3 months time. However, there are people who have used the same PDA for the last 2 years and are very satisfied. You can always upgrade later once you understand better what you need.

The Fundamental Four functions of a PDA are Calendar, Contacts, Memos and Tasks. These are universal. You should have the capability to synchronize with your computer. Sync with the software that comes with the PDA or with your Contact Management system. Also, consider any specialized applications you want. Palm and Pocket PC have huge developer communities that write software for PDAs.

Ask other people you work with about their experiences with PDAs. If you work in a large corporation, don't count on getting support from your IT department. Call and ask their policy on supporting PDAs. You'll find out whether they will hold your hand or leave you on your own. Your IT policy may also dictate what company information you can place on a PDA. Find out first before you load confidential customer information or other questionable data. Use your judgment. If your PDA were handed to your competitors, would you have anything to fear.

Finally, ask for help if you need it. Technology can be complex. There are many people who can help. If in doubt, Google it. Enter a few key words in Google and see what pops up. There are thousands of websites and discussion forums that provide information on PDAs. Also, consider The PDA Pro and this blog as a resource. As a PDA Coach, I teach people how to use PDAs and Smartphones to leverage their time and increase their productivity.

Good luck. Let your PDA be your partner.
